Dedicated to my loving wife, Lila

The seaside is a special place, most of the time. It is a place where people gather who make their living from the sea. The seaside is a meeting place where fisherfolk compare their catches and the variety of fish in their haul; they discuss the weather and the waves and swells. They bring colour and vibrancy to the seashore where they vie with adventurers and holiday makers for space and attention. Then all the trades people also flock to the seaside to entice the seemingly carefree tourists to part with their money. There is a constant activity where the land meets the sea, at least is more benign climes. In the Antarctic Komnick shows us how nature rules, without human intervention as sea lion, seals and penguins vie with each other, the latter intent on not becoming a meal for the former. The seaside can be a forbidding place where the struggle for survival and the rearing of the young are the driving force. Meanwhile in the human world, the seaside is also a place to parade one’s assets and attributes, to seduce and to charm and to savour the social opportunity this confluence in geography has to offer.
